After being picked up by your personal guide at Haifa port, journey in your air-conditioned car through the beautiful landscape of the Judean desert. On the way, pass by the Inn of the Good Samaritan and then Jericho, the world’s oldest continually inhabited city and a desert oasis. Stop to take a photograph at the sign stating: “You are now below sea level." Drive onto Masada, an ancient fortress built by King Herod over 2,000 years ago, and perched on a deserted rock plateau. Enjoy the cable car ride up to the top of the site, during which you can gaze out at the Snake Path below (long and winding, it runs for 400 metres). Atop Masada, enjoy stunning views of the Negev desert, tour the ancient synagogue and bathhouse and explore the remains of a byzantine-era church. Masada was the site at which thousands of Jewish Zealots decided to commit mass suicide rather than be conquered by the Romans…the details of the siege are chronicled by the commander Joseph Flavius and some parts are inscribed on the walls. Today a UNESCO World Heritage Site, its museum is full of archaeological treasures so stop and take a moment to admire them.
Then travel onto the Dead Sea where you can float in saline-rich waters, smear mineral-rich black mud all over your body (found along the shores) or soak in a sulphur pool. The surrounding views of the peaceful, empty Negev desert are guaranteed to relax and rejuvenate you. Return with your personal guide to Haifa port, passing along the way the Oasis of Ein Gedi and the historic Qumran Caves where the Dead Sea scrolls were accidentally discovered in the late 1940s. The day ends with your being dropped off back at your hotel.
